Sam Lane-Smith

Research Associate: DfMA for Housing

Sam joined the CSALT team in the fall of 2024 for his final year of the MArch program. He is a part of the team researching modular housing solutions in the face of rising housing insecurity and shortage under the guidance of Professor Boyle and a group of industry partners. Sam's proficiency in DfMA and his thesis work in the use of models (digital and physical) is instrumental to the project.

Prior to coming to Carleton, Sam completed his BA in architecture at the University of Toronto after having spent several years professionally in the trades. This time prior to school was spent exploring several trades including running a painting business as well as working in both Electrical and HVAC services. These experiences have been pivotal to Sam’s design philosophy that making is integral to knowing. Alongside his passion for making, Sam is accomplished with digital tools including Rhino and Grasshopper which he uses in his digital fabrication work. He can most frequently be found in the Carleton and CSALT workshops exploring fabrication techniques and materials through making and testing.
