Reinterpreting the double wythe brick wall: An investigation into structural optimization
2023
This project illustrates a dynamic tension between two structural systems: new and old. The first system is a structurally optimized form that supports three different weights within the wall. The optimization’s form is derived from the placement of the weights, the dimensional bounding constraints, and the material properties of the clay. The structurally optimized form weaves through the second structural system which pays homage to the form and assembly of a brick wall. The second system consists of two “screens” of 200mm x 100mm x 50mm hollow modular blocks that are separated by a 100mm gap. Our printing strategy further demonstrates our concept of two opposed structural systems by creating a visual difference in the printing lines. Upon assembly, it is revealed that the components of each structural system were printed in perpendicular orientations to each other. The relationship between the structural systems evokes a clear sense of hierarchy.
